The Gospel According To Starbucks & Letter to Howard Schultz Update

I came across this book while looking on Barnesandnoble.com for books about Starbucks (my other fettish, which has it's own post click here to read it). So once I got a list of my Starbucks books, I requested them from my local library. I just started reading The Gospel According To Starbucks by Leonard Sweet, and so far it's really good. Leonard is showing/teaching how to grow in your faith with the help of Starbucks, my favorite quote so far from the book is.

"God has set up shop where you live. The doors are open and the coffee is brewing. God is serving the refreshing antidote to the convention, unsatisfying, arms-length spiritual life - and God invites you in.  God won't make you stand in line."

For some reason this quote made me realize that he's right, that God is inviting us in on a daily basis, and unlike Starbucks I don't need to wait in line. So I've now made a promise to myself and to God. My goal is to read the Bible from cover-to-cover, including the boring parts! This hopefully will not only help me in my religion, but will also help me in my education in religion.

Update on my letter to Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks

So a couple days ago, I was thinking of the letter that I wrote to Starbucks asking for the Green Apron Handbook, the one Starbucks book that I have yet to get my hands on. So when I got the mail that day, it turned out I got a response. Now the reponse wasphrased a little like this

"Cae,
We're so glad that you have enjoyed your experience at the Starbucks that you have been at, unfortunately we cannot send you a copy of the Green Apron Handbook.

Hopefully you will still continue to use Starbucks and enjoy the atmosphere

Sincerely,
Starbucks Employee"

A little disappointed yes, but discouraged? No! I guess it just means that I have to be accepted into University of Hartford, and I guess I need to apply for a job at the Starbucks up the street from U of H, so I've planned my college life out. I will live on campus at U of H work for my library on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. Go to school on Tuesday and Thursday, and work at Starbucks on Saturday and Sunday. Good idea? I think so, plus I would also get the Green Apron Handbook. That's going to be my goal! To get the Green Apron Handbook.

Note to Starbucks: I will always get Starbucks coffee, even if it is 45 minutes away to the closest one, you coffee and Caramel Apple Spice are amazing. Once you go Starbucks, you never go back!

Mom & the Mall

DD had asked to go hang out at the park with two of her friends. I nixed the idea. If we had been down at the fields, she could have gone off with them, but I could not see the point of just aimlessly roaming. It seemed like a recipe for trouble (not that DD tends to be trouble). So I told her that she was old enough to go to the mall with me, but then she and her friends could go off a bit by themselves as long as they checked back with me at the coffee shop (actually I did one better, I found a Boarders Bookstore with a coffee shop) periodically. She was estatic and so the day was planned or so I thought. She and her friends spent all morning making and breaking plans. The phone rang almost continuously, even DD got annoyed at her friends I think. Finally, the appointed time came and we headed over. I actually picked up my father so I had someone to keep me busy too. And would you believe it, one of the "friends" never made it - - -Let me rephrase that, "He arrived just in time for us to leave, as we had other plans for the evening". Then to top it off the other friend decided to stay with him and mean parent that I am, I refused to leave until I made sure that she was with the boy and his father, which resulted in us being late to our next stop. I was supposed to be home at 4 to head to DH's dad's house and instead I was barely leaving the mall. UhOh! So much for trying to be the cool mother of a teen.

However, I did get the next book for my book club, had a great hot vanilla Chai, and had a good conversation with my dad. So it wasn't a total loss.

NOTE: I went to the Borders website to find you a picture of their cafe. I keyed in the location we went to and opened up that link and found this picture of their store, except it isn't a picture of their store in the mall we went to. I hope no one uses this picture when they go online to get directions, because they will drive in circles at the mall and never, ever see this.

A Coffee Treat

DD was gaining extra points today when she bought be me a coffee as we were out doing errands. I didn't ask. I didn't expect it. She went in the gas station to pay for our gas (it is significantly cheaper if you pay in cash) and bought me a coffee with her own money and then the sweetie appologized for it only being a medium and not a large.

How could she have been any kinder?

Ok, if it was a Starbucks Chai, but we don't have that around here.
PS. Jack and Diane is by John Mellencamp, DD.
